Borrowing The Superstar's Fame :: GALATTA !!!

Borrowing The Superstar's Fame :: GALATTA !!!

As the best film producers can confirm, Cinema is one big gamble. To minimize their risks, many directors and producers prefer to repeat time-tested successful stories with small changes in the basic template, resulting in a plot that any child can predict! For some, this pliagarism works, for many others, it fails miserably. Yet, they continue to follow the beaten track.

Now, film makers have found two new ways to seek success in their films. Number one is 'Remakes Rock'! Cleverly choosing from the vast library of hit flicks, directors rehash and remake them – tweaking them to suit the audiences of today. Two movies that followed this mantra and walked down the aisle of success are Naan Avanillai and the super duper hit Billa (which followed the path of the Hindi hit Don and its remake). Both movies were modernized versions of the originals; one was moderately successful; the other was declared a hit.

Coming up in the near future is the remake of Thambiku Endha Ooru, one of Rajinikanth’s much-adored mass movies. This movie will star Raghavendra Lawrence, who will also direct it. Lawrence, with a great reputation as a dance master, has not really gathered good reviews for his acting. Remaking a superstar movie is surely a move to lure audiences, but to grow in reputation as a good actor, much more is needed.

The next publicity stunt is 'Title-lifting', which boils down to using the title of the super hit film of a super star but changing the plot. Heralding this was the Dhanush starrer Pollaadhavan. Many were eager to watch the movie just to see if it was as entertaining as the Rajni starrer – and thankfully it was! Wanting to ride piggyback on the superstar's fame, many other directors have also registered titles of his past hits. Word has it that the next Dhanush flick will also borrow its title from his father-in-law’s movie. This time, it is Padikadhavan. Dhanush hit the target the first time. Will he succeed with Padikadhavan too? Let's wait and see.
