Ajith and his beard-AFE Senthil Says......

Many think that Ajith is growing beard, because his wife Shalini is
carrying a child. But there is surprising news about his beard. It is
said that the beard is part of the get up for his next film.

Ajith is believed to be getting ready for the photo session, which is
likely to be held soon. The pooja will be conducted in a grand manner
within a couple of months.

It is worth recalling that Ajith was maintaining a long hair when he
was booked for Bala's 'Naan Kadavul'. He did not change the get up
even when the film was delayed. In the meantime, he acted in
'Paramasivam' with the long hair, saying that 'Naan Kadavul' was his
dream project and hence he could not remove the hair.

There is no surprise, therefore, that the sincere actor is growing
beard for his forthcoming film.

Billa now eyes Katrina

By Behindwoods News Bureau.
December 26, 2007

Ajith Kumar is on a roll with his Billa being praised by one and all for its packaging and his performance as the notorious gangster essayed by the superstar in the original. He is now playing a good hubby to wife Shalini who is in the family way and is expecting their first child during January.

Ajith has decided to commence work on his next project under Raju Sundaram’s direction, earlier titled Akbar, after his familial commitments are over.

The director has decided to put this time in hand to good use by hunting for the leading ladies to be cast opposite Ajith. The script, he says, demands two heroines and one of them will be played by Suhani. The hunt for the other heroine has been going on for quite some time now. First it was Shriya who was touted to play the role, which slipped out due to lack of dates. Then Parvathi Melton was rumored to be his heroine, the latest to hit the news is that Raju Sundaram is in talks with Katrina Kaif and sources close to the director say that she has indeed consented. It sure will be a treat for fans to see their Thala opposite this bombshell from Mumbai.

Ajith and Rajini

Ajith and Rajini
IndiaGlitz [Monday, December 24, 2007]

Ajith is quite unhappy with an article that was published recently in a Tamil magazine. The article says that superstar Rajinikanth has decided to promote Ajith as his successor and hence training him accordingly. The article goes on to explain how Rajini is “going about the whole effort”.
It has gone to the extent of saying that that it is on Rajini’s advice that Ajith is meeting the press nowadays.Ajith is said to have been disturbed by the article. He feels bad because, he feels, this kind of articles would hurt Rajinikanth.Meanwhile 'Thalai' basking under the glory of the Billa’s success, is preparing himself for the next venture directed by Raju Sundaram.
He is also participating in the story discussion at times. Ajith has decided to commence the shooting by February end. He is quite focused on his job and hence he naturally gets disturbed by these controversies.

Bala compromise for Billa :: Behindwoods !!!

Bala's Naan Kadavul is on a fast track now and the shooting for the film is progressing at a feverish pitch at Periyakulam. December 11th was hero Arya's birthday and he wanted to throw a birthday bash for the unit as it is a customary habit for him every year. But as everybody was busy with the shoot, Arya had to be content with a somber celebration.

However following the release of Billa, the unit was anxious to watch the film and when the strict disciplinarian director came to know of this, much to everybody's surprise, he relaxed his rules and gave a day off to the entire unit to watch and enjoy the film. Needless to say, the unit was totally thrown out of gear in happiness and enjoyed watching Billa thoroughly, all the same thanking the director for the same.

Billa rocks even in Australia-AFE Fan

Hi,

“Thala” rasigargale, there have been various happy information about our “Ajith’s”billa.. One more happy news for you is that Billa not only rocks in Tamil Nadu or India but also in Australia as well.. Ayngaran has released the film in Burwood, Sydney through which many of the tamilians are able to watch the magic.. The theatre is filled up with people and almost all the tickets were sold on these days. Thanks to Ayngaran. The film is absolutely amazing. Ajith seems to the handsomest in his style and looks.. Direction, screenplay, costumes and of course our thala’s acting has been praised many of the viewers.
I have attached a photograph, which shows people coming out of the theatre with satisfaction and everyone had a good time after sivaji.

The talk among ajithfans in Australia is that the hype created by billa over ajithfans is enormous and raised a lot of expectations. Billa satisfies them and some say that although the film is great, since they expected a lot, it could have been done much better. But the film is really rocking.. Thala reaches the zenith in his fan’s heart as well as among the public.

Thala pola varuma…

Billa - Chennaivision

Grand and glossy - Billa

After kindling enough expectations, Billa, the first remake of a Superstar blockbuster is finally out. And beyond any doubt, Ajith has just done justice to do the role, understanding the pressure mounted on him. It is almost like a win or die situation for the actor, in which he had emerged successful.

Technical excellence and racy narration are the two basic ingredients of the film, making it an example for how a remake should be made. Director Vishuvardhan, who had already proved himself in Arindhum Ariyamalum and Pattiyal, has gifted Ajith a right film, which he deserved for years.

Coming to the story, it is the same two-decade old one in which Rajini established himself as a machoman. However, a makeover in the backdrop (Malaysia) and some intelligent changes in the script give the script a Midas touch, one can say.

Ajith, the King of opening will this time will rule the box-office for a longer span, when compared to his earlier flicks. Such is his performance and hardwork in donning the role of a don. Nayanthara and Namitha are the two biggest assets of the film, flooring the audience with their own assets in filmsiest of clothes. Prabhu and Rahman provide enough support to the film.

Neerav Sha has captured exotic locations of Malaysia live in his camera while Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music pumps enough fuel for the film. The remix of My name is Billa makes Ajith fans to dance in cinema halls. Yuvan’s background score too recommends a pat for him.

In short, the film produced by L Suresh on Ananda Pictures Circuit is one more feather in the cap of Ajith and a dedication to Superstar Rajinikanth.

Billa – Brilliant

Chennai Box Office - Billa Leads by a long way

CBO- Dec14 to 16

Moviebuzz

Ajit cemented his standing as the number one opener in Kollywood with his latest slick action movie Billa which soared past lofty expectations as it opened to an unbelievable 97 percent from 10 Chennai screens. It is the second best opening in the history of CBO, and Ajit's finest opening! In Mount Road area, the film opened in four screens- Sathyam, Inox, Woodlands and Albert and in three days did 48 shows and reported 100 percent! Truly incredible, Ajit is the king of kings! Actually Billa, would be number 1 to 5 in our CBO, because the rest of the movies put together do not match up to its collections! At number two is Will Smith's action adventure I am Legend, which opened impressively with 85 percent in six Chennai screens. And at three is Vel, in the fourth position is Polladhavan and in fifth position is last weeks number one Kaloori which has crashed.

Ajith’s next with Sivaji films? :: Behindwoods !!!

Ajith's Billa is receiving positive reviews and its stylish and slick presentation has been the toast of the town these days. The trade is delirious about its performance and the fans have lapped it up. Following this, Ajith's next project is said to be with Raju Sundaram funded by London Karunas.

There seems to be a bevy of offers from different film companies as well who are vying with each other for Ajith's call sheet. In a recent television interview, the star himself has hinted that he might once again be teaming up with director K S Ravikumar. There is also a talk that is doing the rounds in the industry is that A V M films and Pokkiri producer Kanakadhara movies are also keen to cast the ultimate star in their forthcoming ventures.

Meanwhile Prabhu who was Ajith's costar in Billa is said to have been smitten by his bonhomie and has openly appreciated about the latter's geniality and camaraderie. It has also been alleged that Sivaji films is also desirous of doing a film with Ajith. Speculations are rife that Ajith may give green signal to them. Though there are different combinations and opinions about his future projects and producers, confirmed information is still awaited.

Raju thrilled about Billa-Behindwoods

Following the blockbuster Billa, Ajith’s next project is to be directed by dancer turned director Raju Sundaram. He promises that his maiden venture is a fun-filled comedy that will have all the ingredients that every Thala fan would want. Raju Sundaram is absolutely delighted with the immense success of Billa, and is totally excited about working with Ajith, now more than ever.

Raju has great praise for the star’s dedication and relentless effort. He even recollects that time when in view of Ajith’s spinal injury, Raju had crafted simple steps in a particular song where the dance could have been more complex. Ajith, however, told Raju not to compromise on the dance steps owing to his injury, because that would bring down the appeal for the song. Such is his dedication to his job, and Raju is absolutely thrilled that it is he who will star in his directorial debut.

Search for the heroine and finalization of the rest of the cast is going on. Ajith himself has taken a break after the tiring Billa schedules, to spend some time with his wife, who is due to deliver any day. Hence, shooting for Raju's project will commence only in February.

Billa Opening-Behindwoods

The don is back, and in vogue. Redefining the whole meaning of viciousness, Ajith has recreated the once-immortalized-by-the-superstar role with panache. The most hyped movie of the year has finally hit the theatres marking an end to fans’ long awaited anticipation.

Trade Talk:
Thanks to the stunning publicity measures and the expectation generated by fans and media alike, Billa has had an impressive opening.

Ajith thanks fans and media! -Behindwoods

Billa, Billa and more Billa - that’s pretty much all the media can talk about right now. Thala fans, who were waiting with as much tension as the Billa team for the movie’s release, are basking in the success of the film!

Fans and media have been raving about the movie ever since it hit screens on 14th December. Whistling, applause and squeals of excitement echo in every theatre screening the movie. Never lagging in pace, never digressing from the main course, this new age Billa surpasses other don-based action flicks in making, performance and presentation.

Ajith fans and non-fans have unanimously declared Billa a super hit! The movie has received dazzling reviews from the media, and not without reason! The star of the movie, Thala Ajith, has expressed his heartfelt thanks to his fans for their good wishes and the media for their very positive and honest coverage of the movie. In this regard, he even called us at Galatta.com to show his appreciation and give his personal thanks!

It is not often that an actor of such stature goes out of his way to say 'thank you' to his fans and media personnel. With absolutely no airs and with a touching simplicity, Ajith has indeed proved himself worthy of the affection and praise that he has received from fans and media alike.

Billa review in NowRunning.com

Billa,' Vishnu Vardhan's new film lives up to its hype and Ajith simply rocks. This remake of Rajinikanth's 'Billa' of the 80's has all the trappings of a James Bond thriller.

The story is set in Malaysia where Billa, an international criminal and much wanted by the police of several countries, resides. Billa works for Jagdish, the kingpin of this nefarious empire and whose identity remains a secret. CJ (Namitha) is his ladylove. Nayanthara as Sasha, a gutsy young woman wins the confidence of Billa. Little does he know that she has a motive to kill him.

Pursuing Billa is Inspector Jaiprakash (Prabhu), but Billa always manages to give him the slip. When Jai finally catches him, Billa dies in the car. Jaiprakash covers his death and issues a statement to the press that Billa had escaped.

He brings in Velu (Ajith in a double role), a small time thief, but a good soul, to impersonate Billa with the idea of nabbing Jagdish. Velu as a police informer almost leads Jaiprakash to Jagdish, but before that Jaiprakash is killed. The police catch Velu.

How will Velu prove that he is not the real Billa but a police mole? And who is the real Jagdish? Watch Billa as the story unfolds to reveal more.

Packaged as a James Bond movie, with guns, glamorous girls and gizmo, Billa entertains. Racy and engaging, you don't get bored. Shot in exotic locations in Malaysia and presented stylishly, Vishnu Vardhan who gave us 'Arinthum Ariyamalum' and 'Pattiyal', deserves kudos for this new look given to Tamil commercial cinema. Even the title design is cool.

Nayanthara looks great in mini skirts, jacket, dark glasses and tall boots. Equally good is Namitha as the loyal and devoted lover of Billa. Both the women play their roles well with their restrained acting. Prabhu as Jaiprakash is impressive. But this film belongs to Ajith, who just rocks. The Armani designer suits in black and the Rayban glasses suit Billa's character, which he carries off with elan and the right attitude.

A new face Rose Dawn from Mumbai who does an item number. Commendable is the costumes of the cast designed by Anu Vardhan, Vishnu's wife. While black seems to dominate in the film especially in the costumes of Ajith and Nayantara, the use of white costumes for a song sequence stands out. With its crisp dialogues minus melodrama and with a lot of visual effects thrown in Billa is for the new generation.

Billa review in Kollywoodtoday

Cast : Ajith Kumar, Prabhu, Nayanthara, Namitha, Raghuman, Santhanam and others.
Producer : Ananda Pictures
Director : Vishnu Vardhan
Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Winners don't do different things, but do things differently and does Billa approve of this? Of course Billa isn't just a remake, but a trendsetter in the history of Tamil Cinema. Kollywoodtoday.com has got some good reasons to say in what way Billa differs from other ordinary movies that generally aim at collections and not in taking elevating the standard of Tamil cinema.

As of Direction, Vishnuvardhan wins following the trend of `Pick the best and swipe with best'. Indeed he has added more life to the olden version and transformed into almost as a Hollywood flick. Yup! the scenic beauty framed and decorous screenplay carry audiences without their attention getting scattered.
Ultimate Star Ajith Kumar does it all again after Varalaru: he has risen again to the greater heights after many failures with his previous ventures. Stylistically appearing with glossy looks, he looks more perfect donning the role of a mafia don. Hats off to Ajith for rendering an excellent performance and to Vishnuvardhan for breaking the normally presented Tamil flicks.

Very beginning of the movie itself reveals that this is gonna be a different stroke that is sure to bash up with different strokes. As of all, everyone must be quite well-known with the tale of Billa for already there have been three versions with Don starring Amitabh Bacchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Rajnikanth.
Fine! There isn't anything faulty in iterating the story again.

The film set in the backdrops of Malaysia is about David Billa (Ajith Kumar) who deeply leaves the entire network of Interpol Department insomniac with his atrocious activities. In fact he is a great rationalist who feels with his mind and thinks with his heart, simply saying, a man who follows his consciousness. With no tracks left behind him, its DSP Jayaprakash (Prabhu) has couple of police informers along with Billa, who keep informing his whereabouts. Eventually, remaining as a Don he gets their lives evacuated and now Jayaprakash has a secret revealed that there is an informer in Interpol Department who keeps Billa updated with their proceedings and he is Jagdish.

Fine and final, there comes a day when Billa falls prey to Jayaprakash and he is killed. But it's only Jai who knows that he is dead and for rest he has eloped from the cops' clutches. Here enters special investigative officer Gokulnath (Rahman) who joins hands with Jai for the hunt of Billa unknowing that he is already dead.

Sooner or later after this incident, Jai without knowledge of anyone seeks the help of Velu (played by Ajith himself). Who is Velu? An ordinary youngster in Malaysia who leads unsatisfactory life. But the most surprising thing is that his looks are more identical to that of Billa. Gearing up to trap the entire network of mafia including the unknown informer Jagdish, Jai urges Velu to act as Billa and get the entire group trapped…..

First unwilling Velu, later takes up the task and gets transformed as Billa. But it's not just an easy task, for Billa has opponents as his enemies but within his team Saasha (Nayanthara) who joins Billa just to kill him retaliating to her brother's death.

Velu does a decent job informing each and every morsel of news about the entire network of mafia. But it's a complicated situation for him when DSP Jayakumar is shot dead by Jagdeesh and Velu getting trapped by Interpol officer Gokulnath and his team.

How Velu jumps out of the trap and in turn set the trap for Jagdeesh is the entire remaining story about…..
Ajith Kumar has done a splendid job and he must have had Al Pacino in his mind while donning the role of a mafia don. Not alone his costumes, but his stylish looks and excellent delivery of dialogues prove of his ability of fantabulous performance. His voice modulations are of a great positive attribute falling on his part. Of course, he does the best with comedy tracks that he shares with Santhanam and Prabhu.

More equivalent to Ajith is the performance of Prabhu for he does a wonderful task with decent effort. Looks more apt with the role of cop and his body language add more colours to his role.

Yup! We can't miss the ultimate show of Nayanthara and Namitha who churn with their alluring looks and performance. Nayanthara ropes up with not just glamorous part with action based stunts too and Namitha has a matured approach of performance.

Vishnuvardhan grabs the right option of stealing western ideas and using them to polish the original script of Billa starring Rajnikanth. His command over each and every actor's performance is easily evident on the screen. His wife Anu Vardhan swings all the way designing good looking costumes for all roles.
Nirav Shah canning shots with innovative angles grabs the show with slow moving camera movements. Please take note of visualization of the song `My Name is Billa'; the wonderful shots of montages of various sequences have been canned well.

Dribbling with enchanting musical score is Yuvan Shankar Raja who strikes with wonderful music for songs and background. All the songs have been tuned well and man to be remembered beside `My name is Billa' is M S Viswanathan for the original tune of the olden tune has been added with bit of extra beats.

Overall, Billa rocks the entire Kollywood and everyone in the industry are awestruck by the breathtaking presentation of the movie. Congrats to Vishuvardhan for a stimulating flick and please do continue making films like this. As of Ajith, he is raised to the standard of an International actor and we plead him to choose good scripts that have a tailored role for him.

Verdict: Can watch as much times you want……..

Sify s Billa Review

To remake a 27-year old Rajinikanth film with another actor at a time when he is still the superstar, is a major challenge for any director. But Vishnu Vardhan is a daring young man who took up the challenge along with Ajit and they have come out with a fresh new Billa, an escapist comic book like fantasy film, which has been faithful to the original in spirit and soul. Spiffily shot and stylishly packaged, the remake is slick and will certainly appeal to today’s youth audiences.

Vishnu’s Billa is the first designer-look Kollywood film with classy action cuts. It's a technically chic, racy, engrossing entertainer with a Hollywood look. The director wears his Hollywood DVD influence on his sleeve, the way a shot is framed, and with black and white colours dominating as the camera angles convey style! Ajit looks sensational and clearly he is at home, playing dual roles of Billa and Velu. He is suave, dashing, and debonair and has terrific screen presence which makes the film work big time. You just cannot think of any other actor in Tamil donning the role made memorable by Rajinikanth.

Rajinikanth special: The Boss is back
The film is set in Malaysia to give it a rich look. Billa (Ajit) is a modern day suited and booted underworld don who moves around in the company of two glamour girls Sasha (Nayanthara) and CJ (Namitha) who are part of his gang. Billa deals in all nefarious activities like gun running and drugs and has connections with international mafia gangs. The police force in 11 countries is in hot pursuit of Billa who they feel will lead them to Jagdish, the kingpin behind all the illegal operations. After successfully dodging the cops across the world, Billa is eventually pinned down by a sincere DCP of the Malaysian police Jaiprakash (Prabhu) after a spectacular car chase in which he is fatally injured.

Vishnu: Ajit is a cool dude
Now Jai (Prabhu) sees Billa’s death as an opportunity to uncover the entire mob ring by replacing him with a look-alike Velu (Ajit) a petty small time crook and a simpleton to infiltrate into the mafia. Velu alias Billa is able to do the impossible by getting all the information that Jai wanted except about Jagdish the master brain of the underworld. But it's when Jai gets killed, that the real problem arises because he was the only man who knew that the real Billa is dead, and that Velu is actually a police mole. The other police officers investigating the case Gokulnath (Rahman) from the Interpol and the local police chief Anil (Aditya) refuses to believe Velu’s statement that he is not Billa when he is caught and interrogated. Velu escapes from police custody and with the help of Sasha uncover the shocking truth about the identity of Jagdish, which leads to a stunning climax.

The director and his team change the norms of commercial Tamil cinema and breaks new ground by having a script comprising of no more than six- seven dialogue tracks, there is no lengthy dialogues, mush or melodrama, all essential ingredients for mass masala films. The EQ (emotional quotient) which is there in large doses in Tamil films is absent here as Vishnu and Ajit are targeting only the multiplex audiences and they are quite honest about it. Yuvan’s title track and theme music is one of the highlights of the film, though the songs fall flat! The re-mix title song My name is Billa… is no patch on the original and lacks its fervor, while the other re-mix number Vethalaiya Pottendi… has a good beat that makes you dance and is well shot The only mass number is Seval Kodi.., with Vijay Yesudas’s striking voice and colourful picturisation .

For Vishnu Vardhan, a one-time assistant of the guru of cinematography Santosh Sivan, everything is visual and is dictated by the camera. Billa is a film where characters are playing mind games. So Vishnu’s cameraman Nirav Shah has used the super 35 mm and his camera is brilliant displaying an array of flourishes- freeze frames, optical dissolves, colour saturated images, giving a static energy to the frames, aided by Sreekar Prasad’s razor sharp editing. The action scenes have been superbly choreographed by William Ong and are a major highlight.

Billa is an out and out Ajit film. Don’t forget to carry a whistle with you when you watch Ajit meld into two characters- Billa with his Armani suit, Rayban glasses, has a Bond look about him and is cucumber cool while Velu is a riot as he brings the house down with typical one-liners (Athu aaru thalai, Naan oru thalai). Ajit brings to Tamil cinema a desification of Steven Segal, Van Damme style of pure high octane action and humour. He seems to be telling the audiences to just sit back and enjoy the fireworks. In short Ajit as Billa is a rocker!

Nayanthara has given her famous six-yard saris a miss and has decided to go full throttle to look her sexiest best in sizzling hot micro-mini shorts, leather jacket, tall boots! The gorgeous Nayan as Sasha is a show stopper and no Tamil heroine has looked so glamorous on screen in recent times, thanks to her right attitude and stylist Anu Vardhan. Her tan make-up and her costumes are designed with the intention to make your jaw drop. She has a beautiful body which she flaunts daringly and has no qualms about appearing in a two-piece string bikini and is also able to bring out the cold aloofness and bitterness of her character.

All about Billa : Only on Sify.com

Namitha as CJ oozes sex appeal, is surprisingly restrained and her silences give meaning to the deep loyalty and devotion that her character has for Billa. Prabhu as the police officer is a delight while Rahman and Aditya are adequate. New girl Rose Dawn is a disappointment in the item number and is no match to Helen or Kareena’s sensuous jig.

Billa delivers the goods with its great star cast, a designer look, technical glitz, perfect chemistry making it an entertainment extravaganza. Fasten your seat belts and enjoy the ride. Don’t miss it.

Verdict- Racy & Rocking

Yes, Vishnu Vardhan’s Billa (which premiered in a few select cinema halls in Chennai today), releasing tomorrow, proved that it is not just another remake of an old cult film, but magical and a visual treat with its own style and individuality.

Vishnu’s style-mantra project starts with a bang and ends in an explosion, that’s how punch-packed it is. “Part tribute, part original, all slick” is a good description of this movie in which everyone (not just the hero!) looks and sounds simply smashing, with their clipped dialogues, power-dressing and loads of attitude. Plus, Vishnu has ensured that the movie stays within the 2 hour-15 minute time frame, a proof of the tight script and screenplay.

Does Billa actually need a story introduction? Proving wrong all the noise that Vishnu’s Billa is exactly like Shah Rukh Khan’s Don, the movie is INDEED like the Rajinikanth “original”... but with twists and a look and feel completely unique and probably the starkest ever made in Tamil cinema. Quite unlike SRK’s Don, the colours in Billa are not rich and opulent – they are clean, suppressed, contemporary, even Zen at times. There is a lot of black, brown and olive hues, set in contrast to great swathes of white and cream. In such starkness, Ajith as Billa, comes forth larger than life and more stylish than any movie he has done in a long time.

Speaking of Ajith, he is quite clearly the very centre of the movie; or as our December issue of Galatta Cinema magazine shows, he is the eye of the storm that tosses you about for 2+ hours. He looks handsome, hot and very much a “Thala”. While SRK had a metrosexual, clean-shaven look, Ajith sports a devil-may-care and raw-edged stubble that only adds to the masculinity. Plus, his personality is dark, cold and silent as Billa; in complete contrast to the cheeky Velu.

With Billa, the female is as deadly, if not deadlier, than the male. Namitha plays CJ, the gangster’s moll, but with a toughness and shrewdness worthy of any top boss. She is sexy, unabashed, fearless and perhaps even as ruthless as Billa himself. And she loves him to death. Literally.

Nayantara is the one out to tame the beast, consumed by the need for revenge. She is an electric mix of sexy and tough, beauty and fighting skill.

Prabhu is inimitably Prabhu. His authority and intelligence reminds one of Gautam Vishwanath of Mani Ratnam’s Agninakshatram. Rahman plays the Interpol officer with some deadly tricks up his sleeve and Rose Dawn plays the woman who quite possibly, has put all these people together.
David Billa (Ajith). Most-wanted gangster, hiding and operating out of Malaysia, on the top of Interpol’s criminal list. A lone tiger he is, and a ruthless one at that. As he says, “Look at history. If you want to live, to survive, you can kill any number of people, for any reason.” This is Billa – scheming, clever, slippery, enigmatic and dangerous. No one knows his story, really, except that he literally clawed his way to where he is now, from an orphaned and deprived childhood to the top of the food chain. Along the way, he bent and broke every rule for not just survival, but for money, power and love of the game.

DSP Jayprakash (Prabhu) has spent a huge chunk of the last few years looking for the elusive Billa. He has left a life behind in India, only to base himself in Malaysia and strategise the capture of the man who has 50 high-profile crime cases slapped against him. As luck would have it, his path does cross Billa’s and from then on, it’s a rollercoaster ride. What happens to Billa? Who is Velu? How does Jayprakash use him to round up Billa’s operations? DOES he actually close Billa’s shop for good? How are CJ (Namitha) and Sasha (Nayantara) involved? How does he get the help of Interpol officer Gokulnath (Rahman)? What part does Rhia (Rose Dawn) play in Billa’s life? Questions, questions, questions. For a movie that is supposedly a religious remake of the original, Vishnu’s Billa manages to evoke all these doubts and keep you admiring everything from the view to the sounds and thrills.

Two people who deserve special mention for Billa looking and sounding as good as it does are Nirav Shah and Yuvanshankar Raja.

Nirav has magic in his camera and the way he has played with angles and lighting quite on par with a Hollywood biggie – very international, very cool. Everyone knows the kind of output he gives in a Vishnu Vardhan movie, but the clean colours, the cold cruelty and the minimalistic backdrops are brought to complete clarity by him.

Yuvan’s music is brilliant! Every single song sounds great and now that you can experience the audio-visuals, it only gets better. The music gives the visuals so much attitude, so much mystery and arrogance that it is a superb blend. The theme song is probably the best because it arrives with drama and fervour at the right places throughout the movie.

Anu Vardhan’s costumes are in keeping with the personalities of the protagonists – Ajith is urbane and casually, carelessly slick in suits, as Billa; scruffy and lovable as Velu in faded jeans and messy t-shirts and shirts; Nayantara is power-packed and as attitude-filled as Billa himself and dressed in leather, tights, boots and olives. Namitha is a true moll without being a floozy. She is curvaceous, devoted to Billa and shrewd in her own way. The actresses’ roles could have been a bit more or a bit stronger, but we will leave that point for now.

All in all, Billa is definitely worth a watch. Or two. Or three or more!

Billa is back... and he is smashingly dynamic!

Grand opening for 'Billa'-AFE

Grand opening for 'Billa'-AFE
There's nothing to beat the grand opening of an Ajith film. Even if his earlier film is a flop, Ajith fans turn out in droves to support their idol's new releases.

'Billa' is releasing today. This film started with the original star Rajini's blessings.Among Ajith's films, this is the most expensive.

"I have never been shown in such a stylish fashion before," praises a stunned Ajith. The audio sales of 'Billa' have been going on at great tempo. After 'Sivaji,' the audio sales of 'Billa' have been a close competition.

For record ticket reservations also, 'Billa' comes a close second to 'Sivaji.' Mayajaal, Inox, Sathyam and Abhirami theatres have been sold out. In Chenani alone, 'Billa' is being screened in 14 theaters, a feat for an Ajith film.In Chennai, Mayajaal will screen 14 shows, Inox screens 7 shows, and 2 theatres in Sathyam complex screen 'Billa.'

Theatre owners believe the first week's collection alone will reimburse the production cost. Like the city, 'Billa' fever seems to be high even in B & C centres, so that could well happen even under a week.

Billa
Cast : Ajith, Nayantara, Namitha, Prabhu
Direction: Vishnuvardhan
Music: Yuvanshankar Raja
Production: L.Suresh

Sleek masala entertainer, is a genre which Tamil cinema is not much used to. Thanks to bravery of Vishnu and Ajith, you will see more such movies from now on.

To remake a film which was a trendsetter of its times involving someone who was and continues to be the super star, requires sharp skills and is tantamount to walking on thin ice. But where Vishnu Vardhan scores is in his crystal clear vision. He doesn’t want to challenge the original nor change its content. All he wants to do is to repackage it stylishly for today’s trend with some present avant-garde styles in film making. The deliberate attempts by the director not to follow the super star’s style are palpable in every frame which has made Billa stand out tall and high.

Ajith as the ruthless David Billa is a revelation. Stylish, menacing and electrifying, he seems to have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and has completely lived up to it. Rajinikanth can definitely be proud of his successor he has chosen for the tough job.

As the simpleton Velu, Ajith is lively and light, combining with Prabhu for some great moments. When asked by Prabhu to don the role of Billa, Velu expresses his dislike saying that Lord Muruga will not approve of this. When Prabhu sights sura samhara as an example, Ajith counters him saying that ‘avarukku aaru thala, aana enakku orey thala’, having his fans simply break into raptures.

The introductory scene of Nayantara rocks and is on par with such scenes of any other hero of current times. She looks fit, debonair and effortlessly sizzles. Namitha as CJ and Billa’s lover appears in glamorous outfits and satisfies her fans. Prabhu as DCP, cannot be better. Rahman as Interpol officer has done his job well.

Action scenes directed by stunt man William Ong are the highlights. The car chase sequences are first of its kind in Tamil, with Ajith’s racing image adding to the grandeur. Sound effects are perfect and in sync with natural sound and the credit goes to Ayyappan. His efforts come to the fore especially in action sequences. Yuvan Shankar does it once again. ‘My name is Billa’, though shot differently, lacks the original’s magic. The ‘Vethalayai Pottendi’ number could also have been better.

Vishnu doesn’t waste too much time or dialogues on character building. He seems to have depended more on rapid cuts to make the screen play tighter and taut. The two biggest pillars of support for him come from costume department and cinematography section. Kudos to Vishnu’s wife, Anu Vardhan’s hard work and eye for details to get the colors and feel of the costumes perfect. Nirav Shah, the cinematographer’s work is of superlative nature and the result is an absolute visual delight. Seamless editing by Sreekar Prasad adds to the flow of the film.

On the whole, neatly packaged, Billa has lived up to its hype. If you are looking for an enjoyable fantasy ride, you wouldn’t be disappointed.

Verdict: Masala entertainment redefined

Billa for a cause!

We heard that the special shows of Billa scheduled to take place today had been cancelled, because Thalai felt that his fans should be the first to watch his movie - given the amount of support they have given him over the years.

However, for a bigger cause, there will be a special screening of the movie today in Chennai. Each ticket costs Rs. 2000. The proceeds of the show will be given to Shankar Nethralaya Foundation which, in turn, will donate the money to physically challenged people.

Billa, the don with a heart!

Rajinikanth gives Billa a miss

Rajinikanth gives Billa a miss

Billa, Ajith's most-awaited release and the most hyped film of the year, after Sivaji, is to be screened across 10 screens in Chennai. The team had earlier planned to release the film today to coincide with the superstar's birthday but postponed it due to postproduction delays, to 14 December 2007.

Ajith was particular that Rajinikanth graces the function as he was dedicating the film to the superstar. However, much to his disappointment, Rajini had expressed his desire to visit Bangalore on his birthday and his inability to attend the premiere. It is common knowledge that Rajini, as a convention, has been celebrating his birthday away from Chennai for a long time now. Anyway, he had earlier seen the trailer and had lauded Ajith and director Vishnu Vardhan for doing a commendable job. The Billa team is gung ho on receiving compliments from the superstar himself. The team is so particular that no information about the movie is released in the media that they have gone ahead and even canceled the premieres that were to be held today under Ajith's request to the producers and directors as he wanted his fans, to whom he bestows all his success, to watch the movie first. A noble gesture indeed very much in the lines of the superstar himself.

The trailer of Chiyaan Vikram's Bheemaa is now all over the media. After it was initially released on Kalaingar TV, Karunamoorthy of Ayngaran International viewed it. The trailer, which runs for 4 minutes 30 seconds is absolutely fantastic, offering an enticing peek into the movie.

Karunamoorthy, impressed with the film, requested A.M. Rathnam, producer of Bheemaa to allow him to screen the trailer along with the mega release of Ajith's Billa. Rathnam immediately accepted the offer. So now, audiences can get to see the Bheemaa trailer in 72 theatres across the world.

The practice is not very new in industry circles. Though initiated by Hollywood, Yash Raj Films followed this in all their releases. Also the trailer of UTV’s big-budget Hrithik- Aishwarya starrer Jodha Akbar was shown along with Shahrukh Khan’s Om Shanti Om. Superstar Rajnikanth's upcoming animation film Sultan - The Warrior trailer was screened along with Sivaji theatre prints.

Big releases get delayed due to unexpected reasons. If this practice is regularly followed in Kollywood, it will help to satisfy fans' curiosity and whet their appetite, in addition to making the screening mutually beneficial for stars and distributors. This is one more good reason to see films on the big screen.

Galatta.com December 11, 2007, 4:52:28 PM

Ajith’s Billa, a remake of the 80’s Rajinikanth starrer with the same name, is all set for release. With the hype created by the sleek trailer, the film has already been booked for many days even before its release.

Ajith, who had earlier stated that his Billa is a dedication to Rajinikanth, wanted a preview to be held for the superstar. The producer and director, on being informed of their hero’s desire, had taken steps to make it come true.

Now, the grapevine says that there is going to be an exclusive premiere for the superstar in Chennai on his birthday, two days prior to the film’s release.

Added to this, the film will also have two international premieres on December 13. The first premiere, to be held in Malaysia, will see the glamorous Namitha attending it. The second premiere, to be held in the UK, will have the film’s leading lady Nayantara as its star attraction.

For fans in India, December 14 will be the D-Day as the film will hit the screens to provide them with a stunning spectacle.

Ajith Top 10 Movies

Say hello to the new Billa.
by Rediff
Yes, Ajith, who is called Thala by his fans, is one of the biggest Tamil stars today. It has been a roller coaster journey for this actor who entered the film industry as a rank outsider 15 years ago. We look at the racer-turned-actor's landmark films so far:

Aasai (1995)

Ajith made his debut in 1992 in Telugu film, Prema Pusthakam. It was followed by Tamil films like Paasamalargal, Amaravathi and Pavithra in 1993 and 1994.

But it was with Aasai -- produced by Maniratnam and directed by Vasanth - where Ajith made his mark. Romancing a rather reluctant Suvalakshmi (who debuted in the film), Ajith wasn't just on a bid to win her love but also save her life from a maniacal brother-in-law, chillingly essayed by Prakashraj. Not surprisingly, he was branded as Aasai Nayagan (King of Love) by his jubilant fans. A glitzy hero had emerged.

Kaadal Kottai (1996)

Kadhal Kottai's director, Agathiyan, earned cult status after he razed down conventional rules of love in this film. He made his lead pair fall in love without ever having seen each other.

While fresh-faced Devayani lived in Ooty and wrote letters, Ajith worked in Jaipur, handling his fiercely attracted boss, Heera as well.
The film has a nail-biting climax, which spawned dozens of clones. It won Agathiyan the National Award for best direction, and firmly earned superstar status for both Ajith and Devayani.

Vaali (1999)

If Kaadal Kottai broke records for being the romantic hit of the year, S J Surya's Vaali was something else altogether.
Ajith played identical twins, Surya and Deva. One of them is deaf and dumb, and Ajith had to distinguish the characters by body language alone. And he gave a terrific performance! The younger twin romanced sensuous Simran, while the older Deva, with his amorous eye on her, made enough trouble to set the house afire while just chewing gum.
Vaali broke records despite the blockbuster Rajni starrer Padayappa, which released the same year.

Amarkalam (1999)
Director Saran's Amarkalam combined Ajith's usual cheer and peppiness. Making the transition into a proper mass hero, Ajith - wearing a cool stubble -- arrived onscreen, bunking with friends inside a dilapidated cinema theatre. He falls in love with Shalini, and the filmi romance continued in real life. The two soon got married.
Amarkalam ran for a record 182 days -- and Ajith was officially lord of the marquee.

Kandukondein Kandukondein (2000)

After a blitzkrieg of action-packed thrills, it was a treat to see Ajith return to romance in 2000. Playing an upcoming struggling filmmaker, Ajith was perfect in ace cinematographer Rajiv Menon's Kandukondein Kandukondein.
Ajith shouldered his role along with Mammooty, Tabu and Aishwarya Rai, and still won the appreciation of the audience.

Mugavari (2000)

Duraj's Mugavari saw Ajith play an upcoming music director, filled with the fire to succeed. Ajith ascended the ladder of success, supported by his loving family. His interaction with Raghuvaran, the warm and affectionate brother, was a treat to watch, while his tentative advances towards Jyothika were sweet.
No matter how many action movies he might make, Ajith seems to be the king when it comes to romance.

Poovellam Un Vaasam (2001)

If Mugavari had love running along a sidetrack, Poovellam Un Vaasam focused on love. The Ajith-Jyothika combo was repeated in director Ezhil's film.

The audience lapped up the magnificent sets, happy-go-lucky families, and the gradual deepening of affection between lifelong friends. It's a tale with a twist, with a devious villain adding to the masala fare.

Dheena (2001)

The same year saw him return to the world of action -- but this time, he was the bad man. As if trying to prove that he was more than just another handsome face, Ajith morphed himself into a thug -- albeit an immensely likeable one -- with his own set of values.

He romanced a rather frightened Laila and eventually won her over. This Murugadoss film firmly set Ajith among the bankable stars who can guarantee box office success.

Varalaaru (2005)

After a drought at the box office came Varalaaru in 2005. This K S Ravikumar venture made everyone sit up and notice. Ajith played three characters for the first time -- a father and his two sons. But it was his role of an effeminate Bharath natyam dancer in flashback that made everyone go wow!
A R Rahman's songs were chartbusters, and Ajith was, as ever, a sensation.

Kireedam (2006)

A remake of the 1989 Malayalam blockbuster Kireedam starring Mohanlal, Ajith returned to what he does best: an action hero, with a dash of romance with leading actress Trisha Krishnan. Kireedam saw him as the obedient son of an honest policeman and his body language was lauded. Caught in a system that would not let him live an honest life, Ajith's character was forced to take on whatever life threw at him.

Now, in 2007, he is all set to play Billa, a role that made Rajnikanth the superstar

Rajni watches 'Billa' trailer

Rajni watches 'Billa' trailer
IndiaGlitz [Friday, November 16, 2007]

Superstar Rajnikanth watched the special trailer of 'Billa' at AVM Studios with AVM Saravanan in Chennai on Thursday.

It is a well known fact that the superstar has been showing great interest on the remake of 'Billa, which gave him a big break as a commercial hero during 1980s. He had earlier openly appreciated the choice of hero – Ajith - for the remake.

The trailer, the sources say, has impressed the box office king very much. The superstar was all in praise for the director Vishnuvardhan and Ajith.

Billa 2007 has Ajith doing dual roles, and Nayantara in the female lead role. It is said that Ajith looking amazingly stylish while Nayantara at her glamorous best. Namitha does an important role in the film.

The film, produced by Anandha Suresh, has been stylishly executed by the director and the trailer has just shown the glimpse of what we could expect in the film.

The music by the sensational young music director Yuvan Shankar Raja has added to the overall expectation about the movie. Yuvan has said to have given a damn new treatment in the remix version of the super hit song ‘My name is Billa’.

Interestingly, the movie will hit the screens by December 12, the birthday of the superstar - the hero of the original 'Billa'.

Billa audio released in the market

Billa audio released in the market
IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, November 27, 2007]

It was almost like a formality. The audio was already released by the original hero of 'Billa'. Super Star Rajnikanth released the audio last week in a simple function at his Poes Garden residence.

However, the CDs and cassettes were not released in the market. The producers arranged for a formal function to mark the formal release of 'Billa' Audio on 26th of November 2007 at Hotel Residence in Chennai.
The function was short and sweet. Ajith, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Raguman, and Vishnu Vardhan shared a few words to the media persons.

Vishnu exuded confidence about the outcome of the movie and attributed the result to the entire team that worked for the film. The re-made film was shot in Malaysia to give it a fresh look, he informed.

Ajith, clad in black suit, looked smart. He thanked everyone and said that he had said everything he wanted to tell in the press meet he organized last week. He requested the media persons to ask questions if need be. The silence among the reporters vindicated his statement, i.e., he has told everything in the press meet.

The sensational young musician Yuvan was wearing a cap. For him, the experience of working with Vishnu, his school mate, was a fun.

Prabhu, who has donned an important role in the movie, delivered a relatively longer speech. He went about explaining how the entire team was working for the movie. He praised producer Suresh for his dignified conduction. Prabhu heaped laurels on Ajith and described him as an amiable and kind person in the film industry. It was a delight to work with Ajith, he said.

Producer L. L Anandha Suresh, who coordinated the function, thanked everyone for their fullest involvement in the venture. He particularly thanked Rajinikanth for granting permission to remake his movie. He also thanked the media for the importance given to the film right from the beginning.

Earlier, the sleek and stylish trailer was screened. A reporter asked for “once more” and the organizers obliged.
The audio has been brought out by Ayngaran Internationals. Karunas of Ayngaran Internationals was also present on the occasion.

Robo Ajith -Shankar

Ajith and Shankar come together
IndiaGlitz [Thursday, December 06, 2007]

Finally, the twosome has come together. After a lot of on-off parleys with various stars, Shankar has finally decided to go with Ajith. The handsome hero will be the hero of his dream project' Robot', which is a science fiction flick.

First it was said that Kamal Haasan would do it. But it did not take off. Then, after Sivaji, the official announcement came that Shah Rukh Khan was willing to do the role and produce it as well. However, we heard the news that King Khan had finally refused to do the film. Now, it has been confirmed that Ajith has accepted to don the role.

Despite being the leading stars, Ajith and Vijay haven’t done any film with ace director Shankar, who has proved his mettle as a leading director with guaranteed success, handling big stars and big budget. Hence, acting in his film is a dream of many heroes. Ajith, who is fresh and confident after the 'Billa' experiment, is raring to go. The actor, who hasn’t had good run at the box office for sometime now, is confident that 'Billa' would change everything.

It is believed that Ajith will come to Shankar’s film after finishing his next directed by dancer turned director Raju Sundaram.

The coming together of the Ajith, who has a good opening despite his failures, and Shankar, a proven victor, could prove to be a deadly combination.
